Nappy Pin or Diaper Pin
In 19thC cloth diapers (nappies in Australia) were pinned with straight pins, then the safety pin emerged on the market and were found to be a safer option. Safety pins would sometimes pop open from the pressure of the fabric and the movements of the child, occasionally resulting in unpleasant injuries. This led to an additional safety mechanism that locked the pin closed. Pins were often bent from the bulk of the fabric causing the sharp pin spike to fall short of the closing mechanism and manufacturers began to make bent nappy pins to overcome this difficulty with the added bonus that the curve made it easier to push the pin back up through the fabric the layers.
